I walked in stages, usually one day a week, accompanied by friends on three sections and the remainder on my own with Chewy our golden retriever. My husband, being retired, kindly helped with transport. We stayed away only on the last night as the driving distance was getting greater – we can recommend the Exmoor Manor Hotel near Lynton.
As the forecast was good I wanted to finish the Cheriton ridge section and was pleased as I really enjoyed the final short stage into Lynmouth whereas I think, for me, it would have been quite hard after the Simonsbath section.
The weather was good and dry underfoot. I was pleased to have a Garmin GPS so could check the grid reference on a few occasions on Dartmoor and Exmoor when I seemed to be following sheep paths instead of the correct route. I loved the variety of scenery on the walk – some superb green lanes, and a fabulous beech-lined avenue for about a mile. On some days I hardly saw anyone, and luckily had no trouble with any livestock in the fields.
