Decided to do the walk in weekly stages using two cars for transport. Started at Wembury an a mildly sunny day. Walked to Ivybridge, stopping at Yealmpton for a morning cuppa. Managed to arrive at Ivybridge just as heavens opened! Next day’s plan was put on hold due to a foot injury.
Picked up the walk the following week, with beautiful weather early on in the walk, increasingly turning grey. Walk into finish at Holne up a steep track – so be prepared. Holne to Chagford for the next leg. This is where the weather turned really bad and ended up completely soaked. Beware that guide and OS maps show track continuing across the road from Bennetts Cross on the Moretonhampstead road [NOTE Many thanks for pointing this out – the text makes sense but the line of the route on the map needs adjusting SV]. Track was not obvious. Stick to the high ground behind [to the northeast of] the Warren House Inn to avoid the long and arduous boggy ground in the valley below.
Next stages across West [Mid] Devon farmland was mixed with some lovely stretches but due to excessive rainfall was a complete quagmire for long stretches. Luckily we had time to dry boots before next week’s section. Church at Washford Pyne is a nice place for a lunch stop.
Best two days were from Tarr Steps to Lynmouth. Stayed overnight at Countisbury just outside Lynmouth (Blue Ball Inn). Excellent place and will do packed lunch if asked in advance.
